Siddhar's
Siddhars are those who have attained perfection in Yogic practices to ultimately reach the stage of immortality. Through higher-level yogic practices, they attain a state of ultra-luminosity that results in invisibility; thus they remain impervious to ordinary vision. But they can be visible to persons of their choice in a particular form. Such Siddhars work incessantly for the propagation of knowledge and the evolution of souls.
The Siddhars by their spiritual and yogic practices attained immense knowledge and experience in Vaithiyam (Medicine), Vatham (Alchemy), Jothidam (Astrology), Manthirigam (Tantric practices), Yogam (Meditation and yogic exercises) and Gnanam (Knowledge about the Almighty).
There are 18 siddhas who are considered as the pillars of siddha medicine according to Tamil traditions.
Nandi Devar
Nandi Devar is one of the foremost of the 18 yoga siddhas. He has been directly initiated by Lord Shiva himself and some of his contributions include medicine, kaya kalpa, Alchemy, natural sciences and philosophy. Some of his eminent disciples are Thirumoolar, Patanjali, Dakshinamoorthy, Romarishi& Sattamuni. His Samadhi is in Kasi and he lived 700 years and 32 days.
Agathiyar
Agathiyar is considered as the Father of Tamil Literature. He compiled first Tamil grammar called Agathiyam. He is believed to be direct disciple of Lord Siva and his works include alchemy, medicine, meditation and spirituality. There are 96 books believed to be authored by Agathiyar including classical works like Vaidiya Sigamani, Chendhooram - 300, Mani-400, Sivajalam, Sakthijalam.It is believed that the healing spirit of Agathiya hovers around the mountains of the Courtalam situated in the southern part of Tamil Nadu. He has initiated many siddhas including kriya guru Babaji. Some of his disciples are Boganathar, Babaji, Thiruvalluvar, Macchamuni. He has attained samadhi at Ananthasayana. His duration of life is 4-Yugas, 48 Days.
Thirumoolar
He is also called the Prince of Mystics. He is said to be the disciple of Nandhidevar.His masterpiece Thirumanthiram, deals with the body and soul.Thirumanthiram is considered as a Bible of Tantric Yoga.His hypothesis on Atomic theory is considered to be reinstated as Nanotechnology in recent times. The physiological principles which he mentioned during such ancient times are astonishing.Thirumoolar emphasized on ‘sound mind in a sound body’ by which one can achieve mortality by kalpa yoga procedures. His place of Samadhi is believed to be at Chidambaram. His duration of life is 3000 years and 13 days.
Bogar
Bogar is considered as the descendant of Thirumoolar. He was initiated by Kalanginathar and Agastyar. It is believed that Bogar travelled up to China and propagated the spiritual philosophy in China. It is believed that the statue of Lord Muruga which he created contains Nava pasana (Nine arsenical compounds). Till now even after ages, the composition of the idol has been a mystery to all scientists around the world. He is a great alchemist of all times. His contributions on the synthesis of mercury, mercurial compounds and arsenical compounds are noteworthy. He is believed to author more than 42 works on Siddha medicine. His disciples include Babaji, Konkanar, Karuvoorar and Idai Kadar.He attained samadhi at Palani.
Konganar
Konganar is considered as the son of Bogar. He lived probably in Kongunadu in Tamil Nadu.He wrote more than 40 books that deal with alchemy and the elixir (muppu) of life. He also contributed to philosophy, medicine and spiritual practices.He attained Samadhi at Thirupathi.
Theraiyar
Theraiyar is considered to be the master of many fields like astrology, mysticism, alchemy, medicine and language. His scholarship and style of the language are considered to be unique.He mastered many languages like Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Thulu and Sanskrit. His Guru (Master) was Dharmasowmiyar. His work on classification of diseases is noteworthy.
Macchamuni
Macchamuni who is also known as Matysendranath was initiated by Agastyar, Punnakeesar and Pusundar. Some of his contributions include 10 known works on Hatha yoga, Tantric yoga practices etc. Goraknath is one of his eminent disciples. He has attained samadhi at Thiruparankundram.
Korakkar
He was initiated by Dattatreya (Vishnu) and Macchamuni.His major contributions are Korakkar brahma gnanam 1, Korakkar brahma gnana soothiram and Korakkar karpa choothiram.Korakkar is known as Goraknath amongst the Navnath yogis, Korakkar wrote verse texts on medicine, philosophy and alchemy. Agathiar and Bogar were his gurus. His Jeeva Samadhi is in Vadukupoigainallur of Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. Other sanctums related with Korakkar are Perur, Thiruchendur and Triconamalli. Korakkar caves are found in Chathuragiri and Kollihills.
Sattamuni
Sattamuni wasinitiated by Nandi Devar and Dakshinamoorthy. He is considered to be of Sri Lankan origin. His contributions are mainly in the fields of alchemy and 96 thathuvas. His major works are Sattamuni pini gnanam 100, Sattamuni vadha kaviyam 1000,Sattamuni vatha soothiram 200, Sattamuni gnana vilakkam 51. His disciples include Sundaranandhar and Paambatti. He has attained samadhi at Srirangam.
Karuvurar
He is also known as Karuvur thevar. His place of birth is believed to be Karuvur. Edaikkadar is considered to be his disciple. His main works are Karuvurar vadha kaviyam,Karuvurar siva gnana bodhakam and Thiru isaippa. He made significant contribution in the construction of Tanjore Temple. A special shrine had been created(siddhar sannidhi) in the Tanjore big temple in memory of him. He has attained samadhi at Karur.
Sundaranandar
Sundaranandar is the disciple of Sattamuni. It is believed that he got the Siva Linga of siddhar Agastiar, established it in Chathuragiri and worshipped it as Chathuragiri Sundara Mahalingam. This mountain shrine is considered as a dwelling place of siddhars. There is a cave called "Thavasi Kugai" in Chathuragiri. Sundaranandar and his Guru Sattamuni lived there. Some of his contributions include 24 known works: medicine, philosophy etc. His expertise in preparation of chunnam is of great astonishment. In his book “Bogar 7000”, Bogar says that Sundarandar was an expert in space travel and samadhi yoga. He is the grandson of Navakanda Rishi lived in the Kishkinta hills. He has attained samadhi at Koodal (Madurai).
Pambatti
Pambatti is considered to be Discipile of Sattamuni. Eight unique powers (Attama siddhis) of Siddhars are mentioned in his works.His contributions are related with gnana siddhi starting with “Aadu pambe” (dancing snake). He seems to belong to Maruthamalai in Kongunadu He takes the snake for a symbol to represent the human Soul and uses the expression: “AADU PAMBE” as a refrain at the end of each stanza of his poem. He sings Lord Siva as the Supreme Power of the Universe. Sri Pambatti siddhar attained the eight supernatural powers called ‘Ashtamasiddhi’ after performing penance for a very long time in a cave on Marudamalai, near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. He finally attained jeeva samadhi at Sankarankoil.
Kuthambai
His works are more towards spiritual bliss and gnana yoga. He was initiated by Alukkani Siddhar (disciple of Idai Kadar). Kuthambai Siddhar had much propensity for Siddha Science.His songs are highly embedded with indirect meanings and one who understands it can easily get going on the Siddha’s path.He compiled his songs with the word Kuthambai in every stanza, and it is constructed in perception of advising his Kuthambaiiear ring.He attained samadhi at Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu.
Azhugannar Siddhar
Azhuganni siddhar was born during 11-12th century in vairagiri. He is also known as Azhugai siddhar. Edaikkadar is considered to be his guru. His major contribution is Siddhar gnanakovai. All his poems are addressing pathetically towards a lady. His place of Samadhi is Nagapattinam.
Agappei Siddhar
Agappei Siddhar was born in Siddhar Thiruvalluvar’s lineage. Korakkar is considered to be his guru. His contribution is mainly about Gnana siddhi. He personifies the ego of a person as ghost i.e. (“Agappai”- which ultimately leads to worldly savages) and advises, reprimands and guides it to the path of enlightenment. His name literally indicates one who has conquered the ever restless (devilish) mind. He lived for several years and spent some time in Sathuragiri hills. His place of Samadhi is believed to be Thiruvalankadu.

Punnakkeesar
He is the disciple of Machchamuni. He is well versed in both Sanskrit and Tamil. He showed many miracles after consuming Kaya Kalpa. He is also famous to North India for his teachings in Sanskrit.
Pulippaani
Pulipani Siddhar was born in China. He is said to have been the disciple of Bogar. When Bogar crafted the idol of Lord Muruga at Palani, Pulipani Siddhar collected the required herbs. His famous works include Pulipani Jaalam 325, Pulipani Vaidyam 500.
Kamalamuni
He is one of the 18 yoga siddhas. He has attained samadhi at Aarur (Tiruvarum). His contributions include two known works on medicine and philosophy. Kamalamuni 300 is one of the great works.
Kalangi Nathar
He is a direct disciple of Siddhar Thirumoolar and he is associated with Kanja malai in South India and later migrated and lived in China and spread the knowledge of yoga and Varmakkalai (acupuncture) to the Chinese people. Kalangi Nathar decided to go into Samadhi for a very long time (about 5000-years), and called Bogar to come to China to continue with his mission. Bogar visited China about 500 BC and continued his guru Kalanginath’s mission in China. People in China didn’t follow him as much as he had liked, because of his skin colour and limitations of the Language.
